This year, 2011, has special significance as it marks the tenth anniversary of the tragedy on 9/11/2001.  Rockford Area Community Endowment is partnering with communities in West Michigan to create Healing Field to remember and honor the 3,200 victims of 9/11, of which 21 were Michigan residents.  The Rockford Area Community Endowment is composed of the townships of Plainfield, Courtland, Algoma, Cannon and the City of Rockford.  A flag display of 3,200 flags representing each life lost on that day will be displayed for five days, September 9 through September 13 at Cannonsburg Ski Area.  Special programs are planned for each day, with dignitaries paying tribute and reading the names of those who lost their lives.  The event is free to the public and the sale of the flags serves as a fundraiser for the West Michigan non-profit organizations that serve our community.

Take a moment to picture what it will be like to stand in the midst of 3,200 flags, all set on Cannonsburg’s hill by local Scout Troops, 4-H organizations, and many volunteers.    It will be a tremendously moving and inspirational five days.

Sewer Backup & Overflow Kent County Utility Services

SUPERVISOR’S REPORT

Road construction update:
No street paving projects have been scheduled for 2010, but the Kent County Road Commission is making some improvements to the gravel surface on Eva Drive.  KCRC is also starting the engineering work for Parmeter Avenue.  Current plans are to begin paving in 2011 and finish in 2012.

Sewer Update:
Preparations are being made for upgrades to be done in the near future to the sewer lift stations at Grass Lake (shared with Cannon Township), and Rogue River (shared with Cannon and Plainfield Townships).  The Kent County DPW is in the process of searching for sources of excess water flowing into the sewer system.  Eliminating inflow from storm water drains and sump pumps will reduce the number of gallons from Courtland Township that enter the treatment plant and thus reduce treatment costs.  The DPW is identifying the places where storm water is entering the system and contacting homeowners to remove any illegal sump pumps and storm drains from their property that discharge into the sanitary sewer lines.

FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS

As of October 1st, Fire Chief Mickey Davis has become full-time Chief of the Courtland Fire Department.  He now spends mornings at Station #2 on Myers Lake Ave. and afternoons at Station #1 on 14 Mile Rd.

On October 31st Courtland firefighters hosted their third annual Halloween party at Station #2 for approximately 150 neighborhood parents and children.

Our third emergency warning siren was installed in October on Myers Lake Ave. just north of 15 Mile Rd.  When an alert such as a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service, Kent County dispatch activates all emergency sirens in the county.  At this time dispatch is not able to activate sirens in specific areas only.

Note: During power outages or other weather-related emergencies, water will be available at both fire stations.  Please bring your own containers.

Our 4th Annual Coats for Charitydrive begins December 1st.  Please bring your gently used coats to Fire Station #1 or the Township Hall, and we will donate them to a local charity.

Christmas treesmay be dropped off behind Fire Station #1 (14 Mile Rd.), on the south side of the driveway, through January 31st.  Please remove all ornaments, tinsel and plastic bags.

Mickey Davis, Chief

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
Michigan rivers and tributaries stretch across hundreds of square miles in Michigan, including highlands and lowlands. The rivers carry rain and snowmelt runoff, or stormwater runoff, into inland lakes and the Great Lakes. The quantity of stormwater entering our rivers, lakes, and streams along with the pollutants it carries can degrade aquatic habitat and water quality. We can all take simple steps to reduce stormwater pollution. After all, the cheapest way to stop pollution is at the source. Click here for more information...

CEMETERY NOTES - Cemetery Ordinance
It has come to our attention that there are a number of cemetery lots marked “hold” in our records that have not been paid for.  If you believe that you have placed a hold on one or more lots please contact the township offices as soon as possible to make arrangements to either purchase the lots or release them.  The lot price is $150 for township residents and $250 for non-residents.  We will hold lots for no longer than 60 days.  Also, the township will buy back unwanted lots at the original purchase price.  Proof of lot ownership (burial grant certificate) is required.
