COURTLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT
PHONE: 866-3511
FAX: 866-3590

Burn Permits:  Chief Davis reminds residents to call before burning.  The best time to obtain a burn permit is Monday through Friday during office hours.  To obtain a week-end permit call the township office (616-866-0622) on Thursday or Friday.  Permits can only be issued if the DNR has approved burning.  Remember, all burning must be done during daylight hours, and fires must be a safe distance from all buildings and away from tall grass and trees.  Do not leave fires unattended, and have a garden hose handy.  Burning of tires, roofing, construction materials, treated lumber, garbage, plastics or any rubber or petroleum products is prohibited.

Emergency Generator:  Both fire stations are now equipped with emergency generators. In case of a prolonged power outage, water and emergency shelter can be made available to our residents at either or both stations. Reminder:  Kent County tests the warning sirens at noon on the first Friday of the month, April through October.

Carbon Monoxide Facts:  Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning death in the U.S.  It is odorless and colorless and exposure can be fatal.  Common sources of carbon monoxide (CO) are faulty furnaces, house fires, auto exhaust fumes, heaters, indoor stoves, gas-powered generators, cigarette smoke, and smoke from charcoal-fired stoves.  Install a CO detector in addition to your smoke detector.  Call 911 and leave the area if your CO alarm goes off or if you experience symptoms of CO poisoning such as flu-like symptoms, fatigue, confusion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness or weakness.

NEW FIRE SUBSTATION
Fire trucks were moved into the completed fire substation located on Myers Lake Avenue at the end of Peninsula Drive (9535 Myers Lake Avenue) in mid October.

Check your ISO rating on your homeowner's policy with your agent. You may be entitled to a reduction because of the proximity of your home to the new fire substation.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING
Following the holidays, Christmas tree recycling will be available for those worn out evergreens at the fire station on M-57. Please put the used trees on the south side of the driveway, behind the fire station. Make sure all ornaments and plastic bags are removed.

15th ANNIVERSARY in 2006
In 1991 Courtland Township's Fire Department was formed. Prior to that we had been a part of the Harvard Fire Department. Due to township growth, the Board decided it was time for us to have an independent fire department. Since its inception, Mickey Davis has been Chief. We have an outstanding department of fire personnel.

Because of the two fire stations, a major part of the township has an ISO rating of 7. For further information about your own ISO rating, check with your insurance agent. A second rescue truck has been added to the substation on Myers Lake Ave. Also, through a Kent County Emergency Management Grant a lap top computer has been placed in one of our rescue trucks to provide ready responses and critical information. Another grant provided new self-contained breathing apparatus (air packs) for the entire department.

Courtland Township is also fortunate to have an active Fire Auxiliary. At Christmas, the Auxiliary puts on a banquet for fire personnel and Township Board members. The major fundraiser for the Auxiliary is the annual Pancake Breakfast. All the proceeds of this event go to benefit the Courtland Township Fire Department.
